Create Your Own Math Word Problems

Math Resource Studio has many exercise sets that are word problems. Except for Custom Word Problems, these word problems (i.e. Word Problems: Addition; Shopping Problems II) have the actual equations and calculations set up in the programming. Because of this, if you have the text of a word problem you can quickly turn it into a problem template.

For example, the word problems in the Basic Number Operations area have a similar setup. Here is the problem templates editor for Word Problems: Multiplication; I have entered text into the Template box for a basic multiplication word problem:

By hovering the mouse over the tags below the Template box, I can tell what each tag represents.

After replacing the numbers with the factor tags and the word pencils with the objects tag, I now have a multiplication word problem template that can generate a variety of word problems. By clicking the green checkmark in the editor I can see a sample of what the problem will look like. The range of numbers and objects used for the word problems are controlled in the options panel for the exercise set.

Now that my problem template is ready to use I click the green plus to add it to the list of problem templates. My new problem is active by default, but I decide to make some of the templates inactive and make sure I save the customized collection of word problem templates.

And here is what a worksheet can look like with my newly customized multiplication word problem templates.
